Selena Gomez—a singer-songwriter and one of the starring actors in Only Murders in the Building—responded to fans who were concerned for her well-being after she posted a skincare routine on TikTok in which her hands were shaking, attributing the side effect to her lupus medication, according to an article published in The Independent. Having opened up about her diagnosis in 2015, Ms. Gomez has since undergone a kidney transplant and has been an advocate for lupus research. Experts noted that patients with the condition may experience inflammation in their lungs, heart, liver, kidneys, skin, and other parts of the body as the immune system targets normal tissue—leading to chronic physical pain. Ms. Gomez has also recently revealed that her mental health struggles have been intensified by the physical pain of lupus flares. “When I wake up, I immediately start crying because it hurts. I’ve been having really bad dreams about my past … and my mistakes—that’s what drives me into depression.” In 2022, Ms. Gomez produced the Apple TV+ documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, in which she detailed and hoped to spread awareness for what patients experience when living with lupus, bipolar disorder, and depression.
