In an article published in BuzzFeed, rheumatologists offered advice on the most effective products patients can use to relieve their osteoarthritis. The experts noted that the condition can be degenerative and inflammatory, commonly affecting the hands, knees, and hips. They predicted that cases are likely to rise as older age and obesity become more prevalent among the population, but that patients may relieve symptoms with strengthening and aerobic exercises that increase joint function, as well as a variety of over-the-counter products. Vibrating heated knee braces that reduce inflammation and increase blood flow to muscles surrounding the joints may offer stability during daily activities and exercises—especially during the colder months. A digital TENS unit can be used to stimulate superficial nerves centered around the joints to relive pain. For the hands, a thumb spica splint offers support to the thumb, compression gloves may help diminish symptoms of hand osteoarthritis, and paraffin wax can simultaneously hydrate and soothe pain. An exercise mat may encourage low-impact exercises such as Pilates, Tai Chi, and yoga—all of which can reduce osteoarthritis pain in the hips and knees. For oral pain relief, rheumatologists recommended ibuprofen but warned that patients who also have stomach ulcers, kidney diseases, or asthma should consult their physicians before taking the medication. Additionally, the experts suggested topical medications such as diclofenac gel or capsaicin cream to reduce inflammation, stiffness, and aches when applied directly to the joint areas. For patients with arthritis who may be unsure of what options are most effective, experts recommended consulting their rheumatologists.
