In an article published in CNN, experts recommended low-impact exercises that patients with arthritis can use to relieve their stiffness, pain, and swelling. The experts noted that regularly walking, biking, or taking part in swimming activities such as water aerobics may be sufficient for many patients with arthritis. Exercises involving flexibility, balance, and strength were also recommended, including yoga, tai chi, and Pilates—which uses the core to strengthen and protect the joints. Patients were also encouraged to get creative with activities they have available to them—including dancing, gardening, playing bocce ball, skiing, and using elliptical machines. However, for patients who don’t regularly exercise, the experts suggested starting with 5 minutes of exercise per day and working up to 30 minutes—and being aware that the body may take 6 to 8 weeks to adjust to participation in new physical activities. Patients who do exercise regularly were advised to listen to their bodies and decide whether an exercise may be benefiting or worsening their arthritis pain. The experts concluded that patients should select activities that best suit their needs and continue following a regular exercise routine in order to delay, prevent, and ease arthritis.
