In an article published by Parade, experts addressed the habits that may be most harmful for patients with arthritis. The experts recommended that patients lead an active lifestyle to avoid worsening arthritis-related symptoms such as joint pain and noted that many patients falsely believe that exercise can aggravate arthritis. On the contrary, regular exercises that are individualized to suit patients’ needs can improve joint health and functionality. For those with limited capabilities, starting off with aquatic exercises may help increase the range of abilities they can perform in the future. Patients were also advised to avoid eating unhealthy foods such as red meats as well as those high in sodium, processed sugars, and fats that may lead to weight gain and greater joint stress; instead, they should follow the Mediterranean diet, which calls for the consumption of plant-based foods and healthy oils. Further, patients who wear poor-fitting footwear, high heels, and heavy purses or backpacks can increase their risk of worsening arthritis pain in the knees, hips, back, and neck. The experts suggested that footwear should provide good stability, arch support, and shock absorption and that purses and backpacks should include two shoulder straps to maintain weight at the center of gravity.
