In an article published in Medical News Today, experts offered advice for maintaining a healthy weight among patients with ankylosing spondylitis. They explained that symptoms such as chronic pain, fatigue, and stiffness may encourage patients to follow a more sedentary lifestyle, resulting in weight gain. However, for some patients, the disease may trigger inflammatory bowel disease and other digestive issues that could affect their appetite and lead to unintended weight loss. Further, the experts stressed that although weight does not worsen the severity of ankylosing spondylitis, obesity can cause additional stress on the bones and joints and underweight can cause nutrient deficiencies and anemia. To maintain a healthy weight, the experts advised patients to:

  • Consume nutrient-rich foods and consult with a registered dietician for a personalized nutrition and meal plan
  • Be mindful of portion sizes
  • Choose low-impact exercises to maintain physical activity—such as yoga, swimming, and cycling
  • Join a support group to connect with other patients who have ankylosing spondylitis
  • Manage stress by meditating or starting a hobby that promotes relaxation.
