According to an article published in People, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit actor Christopher Meloni detailed the impact chronic Lyme disease has had on his family in a new public service announcement for the Global Lyme Alliance. The new announcement was intended to boost awareness of Lyme disease’s symptoms, the reality of living with the disease, and the significance of early-stage diagnoses. Mr. Meloni explained that when his family member initially developed symptoms of Lyme disease, they believed it was the influenza virus. However, their symptoms later included migraines and arthritis. After 2 years, his family member was finally diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease. Experts recommended that individuals watch for early-stage symptoms of Lyme disease such as headaches, fatigue, joint pain, a bullseye-shaped rash, and influenza virus–like symptoms; as well as late-stage symptoms, including severe headaches, severe joint pain, memory issues, neurological issues, impaired hearing and vision, myocarditis, encephalitis, and paralysis. Mr. Meloni encouraged individuals to get involved in efforts to raise awareness of Lyme disease and to support patients living with the disease. “I was surprised how little and poor the information was [that was] being given out to the public. You want people to recognize what is happening and empower those that are suffering. Lyme disease is one of the fastest-growing epidemics and it’s woefully underfunded by governmental agencies,” Mr. Meloni concluded.
