The University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (UMass Chan) announced that it is collaborating with UMass Memorial Health to launch the new Lupus Center for research and clinical care. Led by Roberto Caricchio, MD, Professor of Medicine, the Myles J. McDonough Chair in Rheumatology, and Chief of the Division of Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine at UMass Chan, the Lupus Center will focus on investigating factors that may trigger the development of lupus and disease flares, the role of artificial intelligence in clinical practice, and early indicators of the disease. Researchers at the new center will collect samples to aid in the discovery of novel therapeutics, and patients will have the opportunity to receive the new treatments if they do not respond to standard care. “My vision for the Lupus Center is to provide patients [with] a host of services that aim at their betterment from a well-being and a clinical point of view,” concluded Dr. Caricchio.
