The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) announced that it has partnered with the Arthritis Foundation to launch the new Ankle Arthritis Think Tank Research Grants program aimed at discovering new treatment options for patients with ankle arthritis. Afflicting more than 30 million patients in the United States, ankle osteoarthritis is both underreported and undertreated, and can lead to disability and adjacent joint arthritis. With 2-year, $200,000 grants, the new program will support clinical research into ending or slowing the progression of osteoarthritis, developing therapeutics such as orthobiologics to alter disease progression, optimizing the biomechanics for preventive treatments, enhancing assays for early detection of the condition, and assessing genetic risk factors associated with ankle osteoarthritis. Researchers interested in applying are encouraged to submit letters of intent by March 1, 2023, and applications by April 1, 2023, and are advised to visit aofas.org for more information.
