In a press release from the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST), experts warned that cases of osteoarthritis may rise significantly by 2050. Currently, about 67% of individuals older than age 50 years may experience pain and reduced functionality caused by creaking or cracking knee, hip, spine, and hand joints. The incidence of osteoarthritis is expected to heighten to about 33% in the overall population over the next 26 years as the population becomes older and more sedentary, diet and lifestyle behaviors may worsen, and the prevalence of overweight and obesity is projected to increase. As a result, the Open European Network on OsteoArthritis (NetwOArk) COST Action was launched in October 2022 to build a collaborative network of patients, patient advocacy groups, researchers, physicians, pharmaceutical companies, small and medium enterprises, medical device manufacturers, and policymakers across 17 countries and establish the new European Society for Osteoarthritis. The network will seek to boost awareness of the potential impact of osteoarthritis on patients and the health-care system; communicate advances in osteoarthritis research to national patient organizations, physicians, and policymakers; educate health-care providers on the most updated treatment guidelines; and translate scientific knowledge from experimental research to the private sector to facilitate the development of novel therapeutics. The network plans to consolidate and expand efforts from research programs in rheumatology, primary care, orthopedics, pain medicine, psychology, physiotherapy, public health, and cell therapy. “The main aim of NetwOArk is to bring all the major stakeholders together and create a robust community of European researchers dedicated to osteoarthritis research and clinical development,” concluded Ali Mobasheri, BSc (Hons), ARCS (Hons), MSc, DPhil (Oxon), Science Communication Coordinator at the NetwOArk COST Action.
