The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) announced the winners of its annual awards at the 2023 World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis & Musculoskeletal Diseases. Among the winners were:

  • Jean-Yves Reginster, MD, PhD, Outstanding Professor and Director of the Division of Epidemiology, Public Health, and Health Economics; Professor of Bioethics and Societal Medicine; and Honorary Chair of the Bone and Cartilage Metabolism Unit at the University of Liège as well as the Director of the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Center for Epidemiology of Musculoskeletal Health and Aging. Dr. Reginster was honored with the IOF Medal of Achievement for his impactful scientific contributions to the understanding of osteoporosis, his efforts to improve patient care standards and educational initiatives, and his osteoporosis advocacy.
  • Bernard Cortet, MD, PhD, Professor of Rheumatology and Head of the Department of Rheumatology as well as the Neuroscience and Musculoskeletal Unit at the Lille Hospital and University Center, President of the Osteoporosis Research and Information Group, and Vice President of the French Society of Rheumatology. Dr. Cortet received the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis & Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO)–IOF Herbert Fleisch Medal for his outstanding achievements in basic bone science and musculoskeletal research, health professional education, and bone health advocacy.
  • Osvaldo Daniel Messina, MD, Director of the Department of Rheumatology at the Cosme Argerich Hospital and President of the Rheumatology and Osteology Research Foundation. Dr. Messina was presented with the IOF Committee of National Societies Medal for his research into preventive therapeutics for osteoporosis and his dedication to increasing awareness and patient care standards for the disease.
  • Nicholas Harvey, MB BChir, PhD, FRCP, Professor of Rheumatology and Clinical Epidemiology and Director of the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre at the University of Southampton as well as Chair of the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors. Dr. Harvey received the IOF Olof Johnell Science Award for his advancements in osteoporosis research and policy implementation.
  • Germain Honvo, MSc, PhD, Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Abomey-Calavi as well as a scientific collaborator in the Division of Public Health, Epidemiology, and Public Health Economics at the University of Liège. Dr. Honvo was awarded the ESCEO-IOF Pierre Meunier Young Scientist Award for his demonstration of notable early-career scientific merit in osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal research.
