According to a press release from EULAR, a healthy lifestyle may help patients with osteoarthritis reduce their risk of mortality. In a new retrospective cohort study—presented by Fan et al at the EULAR 2023 Congress and simultaneously published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases—investigators examined the lifestyle and outcome data of 104,142 patients with osteoarthritis. After 2 years of follow-up, the investigators identified 9,915 deaths and determined that sleep duration and physical activity were inversely associated with all-cause mortality in this patient population. Researchers recommended that patients get 7 hours of sleep per night, take part in moderate to vigorous exercise regularly (approximately 550 minutes per week for moderate physical activity and 240 minutes per week for vigorous physical activity), and maintain a healthy body weight to reduce their risk of mortality.
