Patients with psoriatic arthritis may have a heightened level of aortic vascular inflammation and may be at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease compared with the general population, according to a press release from EULAR. The new findings were presented by Kleinrensink et al at the EULAR 2023 Congress and simultaneously published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. In a new study, researchers used positron-emission tomography/computed tomography scans to compare levels of inflammation in 75 patients who had psoriatic arthritis and active peripheral arthritis with 40 controls who did not have an inflammatory disease. After conducting the scans, the researchers discovered that those with psoriatic arthritis had elevated levels of aortic vascular inflammation compared with controls.
