The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) announced that Ellen Gravallese, MD, has been honored with the ACR’s Presidential Gold Medal for her career-long contributions to the advancement of the field of rheumatology. She will be presented with the award at the ACR Convergence 2023 annual meeting. Dr. Gravallese currently serves as the Theodore Bevier Bayles Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Inflammation, and Immunity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital—where she focuses her research on identifying the fundamental mechanisms behind inflammation and joint destruction in patients with inflammatory arthritis, as well as the key cell types and pathways through which inflammation impacts the bones. Dr. Gravallese was also elected President of the ACR in 2020 and worked to deliver clear and effective scientific guidance to rheumatologists and rheumatology health-care professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic—notably, on treatment for patients with multisystem inflammatory syndrome, patient safety, financial issues, approaches to telemedicine, and the management of immunocompromised patients with rheumatic diseases. “I am incredibly grateful to the ACR for this award [and] I feel extremely grateful to be a part of all the scientific discoveries that have occurred. It’s incredible to have worked at a time when there have been so many important advances in our field,” she concluded.
