Rheumatologists at Yale recently developed an educational lecture series to address the shortage of rheumatologists in Rwanda, according to a press release from the Yale School of Medicine. The practitioners explained that while rheumatic diseases may be more prevalent in Rwanda than realized, physicians in the country often do not have the resources to adequately treat these patients. Launched in 2019, the program was designed to increase interest in rheumatic diseases among internal medicine residents in Rwanda and has featured skills workshops; problem-based learning sessions in small groups; and, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual lectures on the clinical management of diseases such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus. The rheumatologists hope that their program can continue to inspire more medical residents in Rwanda to seek training in rheumatology and potentially encourage physicians trained at Yale University to practice in Rwanda in order to increase the country’s patient care capacity for those with rheumatic diseases.
