The ACR has announced that members of the House of Representatives have created a line item to designate funding from the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program to research arthritis in veterans. The program has funded arthritis research since 2009; however, the funding was not guaranteed as a result of other demands and limited funds. The new line item—advanced as part of the fiscal year 2024 DoD Appropriations Bill—is expected to create consistency in expanding research efforts on risks, outcomes, and treatments of arthritis in this patient population. “[With] breakthrough research and treatment, this program will not only strengthen our military, but will benefit all [patients] living with arthritis,” concluded Douglas White, MD, PhD, President of the ACR.
