The Hospital for Special Surgery Research Institute, in collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine, announced that they have received two grants to investigate the pathologic mechanisms behind lupus flares. With the Department of Defense’s 3-year grant to study the impact of proteins from the skin on the lymph nodes and the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) 2-year grant to study the effects of nonprotein molecules on lymph nodes and fibroblasts, the researchers plan to study how photosensitivity may be elevated by molecular pathways—and how these pathways may, in turn, induce lupus flares. The researchers hope to use both grants to identify lupus pathogenesis and find more effective treatment options for patients with lupus.
