The Arthritis Foundation announced plans to improve disparities in arthritis care for patients from underserved communities with new diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programming. The foundation stressed that socioeconomic status, language, and cultural and racial differences between patients and physicians can all create barriers to care that can lead to worse patient outcomes—particularly among Black and Hispanic populations. Through the new programming, the Arthritis Foundation plans to increase minority representation in the field of rheumatology, grants and fellowships for rheumatology specialists, and resources for patients with have darker skin tones. The new programming will also support the development of new online and in-person arthritis awareness and education initiatives designed to promote healthy behaviors and culturally relevant support for patients in underserved communities. Individuals who want to get involved in the new programming are encouraged to visit arthritis.org.
