Lund University announced that Andrea Dell’Isola, PT, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Lund University, was recently awarded $6 million Swedish kronas from the Swedish Research Council to investigate the link between osteoarthritis and metabolic diseases. Dr. Dell’Isola began his investigation of metabolic diseases for his doctoral thesis, where he analyzed patients with osteoarthritis and identified a subgroup of with comorbid metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure. In a new study, he plans to evaluate 80,000 patients with osteoarthritis to better understand how metabolic diseases might affect osteoarthritis development, progression, and management, as well as opiate prescriptions. “My hope is that [this research] will lead to improved prevention and better care for the millions of [patients] who currently suffer from osteoarthritis—[and] that [individuals] will understand how important multimorbidity is and stop thinking ‘one disease, one treatment’,” concluded Dr. Dell’Isola.
