The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) announced during ACR Convergence 2023 that it has appointed Deborah Dyett Desir, MD, as the 87th President of the College. Dr. Desir currently serves as Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine in the Section of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology at the Yale School of Medicine as well as Medical Director of Yale Medicine Rheumatology, and has been a long-time member of the ACR. In her new role, she plans to advance the careers of women in rheumatology leadership positions, enhance the resources available to small private practices, raise funding for novel rheumatology research, and bolster the ACR’s advocacy initiatives at all levels. “It is with great pleasure that I step into this role to … forge a new path that continues to advance the College’s mission, goals, and initiatives to empower and support the rheumatology care team in their efforts to be there for their patients,” concluded Dr. Desir, who became the first Black woman to lead the organization in November 2023.
