In a study published by Pongcharoen et al in theĀ Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, a randomized, controlled trial showed that patients who underwent unicompartmental (or partial) knee arthroplasty showed faster recovery results according to the 2-minute walk test and the Timed Up-and-Go test when compared to patients who underwent a total knee arthroplasty. Two-minute walk test evaluation showed patients who underwent partial arthroplasty were able to walk farther distances 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months postprocedure; however, at 1 and 2 years, distance walked was comparable between patients who underwent partial vs total arthroplasties. The mean Timed Up-and-Go test time was also shorter among patients who had a partial arthroplasty at 6 weeks and 3 months.
