A subset of anti-dsDNA antibodies that attack the enzyme DNase1L3 has been identified, and researchers found this subset was present in patients with severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The research team took blood and serum samples from patients with severe SLE and patients without the disease. In patients with severe disease, antibodies that attack both DNase1L3 and DNA were identified; if only one type of antibody was present, the association was not significant. These findings were published by Gomez-Bañuelos et al in Nature Communications.
