Investigators have discovered that gout may be associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), according to a study published by Hamid et al in JGH Open. Previous studies have shown that IBD may be associated with altered uric acid metabolism. In the new study, investigators used a multicenter database to identify 458,500 patients diagnosed with IBD from 1999 to 2022. Among 249,480 patients with Crohn’s disease and 209,020 patients with ulcerative colitis, 5.6% (n = 14,000) and 4.4% (n = 9,130) of them had gout, respectively. The investigators noted that Crohn’s disease (odds ratio [OR] = 1.68, confidence interval [CI] = 1.60–1.75) and ulcerative colitis (OR = 1.38, CI = 1.31–1.44) were both positively associated with gout. They also found that patients with IBD who underwent intestinal resection were more likely to have gout than those who did not undergo the procedure. The investigators concluded that it may be critical to examine patients with IBD who present with new-onset arthritis for gout.
