A systematic review and meta-analysis published by Guo et al in the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases found evidence that gout is associated with an increased risk of developing venous thromboembolism, as well as deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Five studies involving nearly 643,000 patients were included in the review and analysis; patients with gout had a higher risk for venous thromboembolism (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.33, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.21–1.46, P < .001), deep venous thrombosis (HR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.22–1.62, P < .001), and pulmonary embolism (HR = 1.18, 95% CI = 1.07–1.30, P = .001).
