In a systematic review of medical literature including 27 studies published by Coates et al in The Journal of Rheumatology, researchers found marked differences in symptom presentation of psoriatic arthritis between male and female patients. Among women, there were higher rates of peripheral disease (including more reports of tender joints), worse pain and fatigue scores, and lower rates of treatment response; among men, there were higher rates of axial disease and a higher burden of skin disease. Researchers noted that this review should prompt more in-depth research into sex-specific differences in the disease, but concluded, “This review indicates that important differences exist between the sexes in psoriatic arthritis.”
