In an article published in Newsweek, experts revealed the active ingredients in skin-care products that may be damaging the skin in younger individuals. The experts noted that skin-care trends on social media have recently popularized the use of antiaging products among children as young as age 10. In adults with wrinkles, ingredients such as retinol can help increase collagen production and slow the process of aging. However, they stressed that antiaging products typically contain active ingredients—including retinol and retinoid, exfoliating acids like salicylic acid, and peptides—that can cause skin irritation, rashes, acne, retinoid dermatitis, and eczema in younger individuals whose collagen production has not begun to diminish. Further, these ingredients may increase the risk of sunburns and sun-related damage to the skin. The experts recommended that younger individuals who want to partake in skin-care routines should cleanse their face once or twice daily, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher prior to heading outdoors, apply a facial moisturizer when the skin is dry, and only use skin-care products that do not contain strong active ingredients.
