In a new episode of Gimlet Media’s podcast Science Vs, host Wendy Zukerman discussed whether many of the products advertised by the skin-care industry as having anti-aging properties may be misleading. Ms. Zukerman consulted several experts to discover which skin-care habits have been proven to boost skin health as well as debunk the false claims—such as that collagen, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid can rejuvenate the skin; and that vitamin A–based products like tretinoin and retinol can eliminate wrinkles. Experts warned individuals to be aware of the scientific-sounding language skin-care companies often deploy to lure in consumers and prey on their insecurities. However, they also revealed that a skin-care product that may be effective is sunscreen—which has been known to minimize sun damage and prevent the formation of wrinkles. “When it comes to the stuff we put on our skin, nothing’s really going to make it [look] like it used to. We just have to keep putting sunscreen on and hope for the best,” Ms. Zukerman concluded.
