In an article published in The New York Times, experts revealed potential contributing factors to the appearance of accelerated aging of the neck compared with the rest of the body. They explained that skin on the neck is often exposed to more wear and tear as a result of posture, amount of time spent in the sun, natural weakening of the neck muscles, as well as the neck’s thinner dermis and lower ability to repair the skin. The experts emphasized that protecting the neck from ultraviolet A radiation emitted from the sun by applying a sunscreen—with an SPF of 30 or higher—before spending time outdoors may be the most effective way to prevent wrinkling and damage to collagen- and elastin-producing cells, which help maintain the skin’s firmness and elasticity. The experts also recommended that individuals can increase the health of their neck skin by involving the neck in their daily skin-care routines, including using moisturizers and retinoid-based lotions or serums; avoiding alcohol-based products and those that include surfactants and alkaline ingredients such as sodium tallowate; adopting a more upright posture to reduce the development of skin wrinkles; and quitting adverse lifestyle habits such as smoking. For those who want to reduce the appearance of neck aging, individuals should consult a dermatologist who can communicate about potential treatment options such as botulinum toxin (Botox), fillers, or microneedling.
