Bassel H. Mahmoud, MD, PhD, FAAD, Associate Professor of Dermatology at the University of Massachusetts, alongside the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), shared recommendations to help patients with vitiligo take care of their skin in light of Vitiligo Awareness Month in June. Patients who need more information about managing the condition at home should visit aad.org. Among the recommendations were:

  • Protect the skin from the sun by wearing sun-protective clothing and broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Use waterproof makeup, self-tanner, or skin dyes when attempting to add color to the skin.
  • Avoid injuries such as scrapes that can cause new vitiligo patches.
  • Join a support group or get counseling to put mental health first and boost self-esteem.
