On May 11, 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the end of the public health emergency of international concern for the mpox outbreak, according to an article published in CNN. The development comes 10 months after a global health emergency was initially declared for the virus. In a meeting concerning WHO’s emergency committee for mpox, members cited sharp declines—up to 90%—in case numbers in support of ending the global health emergency. However, public health officials in some countries have expressed apprehension about what the end of the global health emergency could mean for future mpox resurgences, vaccine effectiveness, and management of the epidemic in West and Central African countries. In response, the WHO emphasized that it will keep addressing the challenges that arise from the mpox virus, although not at an emergency level. The organization urged countries not to reduce their mpox testing and vaccination efforts and to recognize that the virus will still be transmitted. “Mpox continues to pose significant public health challenges that need a robust, proactive, and sustainable response,” concluded Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, PhD, Director-General of WHO.
