In an article published in Well + Good, experts shared recommendations to help patients with psoriasis keep their skin healthy during the summer months. They suggested that patients swim in salt water if possible and avoid chlorinated pools. They noted that salt water can break down the thick skin plaques caused by psoriasis, help to remove dead skin cells, and improve the appearance of plaque psoriasis—whereas chlorinated water can dry out the skin. Patients should also avoid getting sunburns by wearing a waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and making sure to apply it to all areas of exposed skin, especially any with psoriasis plaques. Further, avoiding stress, heat, and excessive sweating can help patients prevent flare-ups. Although sitting in an air-conditioned space can help, the experts warned that patients should apply a heavy moisturizer frequently to reduce the risk of dry skin. They should also wear lightweight clothing, such as flowy dresses or breathable cotton shirts. The experts concluded that patients should consult with a dermatologist to determine an appropriate summer treatment plan for their psoriasis.
