The Skin Cancer Foundation announced that it has raised $725,000 for research initiatives and educational programs at its annual Champions for Change Gala on May 10. The foundation noted that 400 guests were in attendance at the event—including donors, allies, and the media. Among them were also celebrities such as Brendan Fraser, Veronica Webb, and Wali Collins. In addition, the foundation presented two awards: the first to former The New York Times columnist Jane Brody, who received the Media Impact Award for spreading awareness of skin cancer through her writing, and the second to the sportswear company Tommy Bahama, which received the Champions for Change Award for implementing the Volunteer Donation-at-Checkout Campaign that has raised over $500,000 for the foundation. “This is our second gala during Skin Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight the urgency of The Skin Cancer Foundation’s mission. It’s important … that each and every one of [the attendees] feels connected to [the gala’s] program and this celebration of The Skin Cancer Foundation’s work,” concluded President of the Foundation Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, FAAD, FACP, Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the New York University School of Medicine as well as Director of Dermatology at Cosmetique Dermatology, Laser & Plastic Surgery.
