The Skin Cancer Foundation announced that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Experts explained that although skin cancer may be the most common cancer type, it’s often one of the most treatable if detected early. Through educational initiatives, social media events, and fundraisers, the Skin Cancer Foundation hopes to build awareness of skin cancer risk factors and preventive methods. They encouraged individuals to take part in various activities throughout May—including helping to spread the Foundation’s messaging on skin cancer facts and guidelines with #SharetheFacts, uploading a photo or video of a self-exam and prompting friends and family to get involved using #SkinCheckChallenge, and sharing experiences with skin cancer for those diagnosed with the disease using #ThisIsSkinCancer. Individuals were also encouraged to donate to various fundraisers or start their own to raise money for life-saving screening programs.
