According to an article published in HealthDay, the FDA urged patients to be cautious when considering at-home treatment for the viral skin infection molluscum. Reportedly, though some cases of the disease can last up to 5 years, the administration explained that molluscum often resolves on its own within 1 year. However, because the FDA has not currently approved any treatments for molluscum, patients who opt for over-the-counter treatments may be delaying the proper diagnosis and treatment of the disease, which could potentially worsen their symptoms. Further, without a diagnosis, patients may not know if they have a more serious disease. The FDA advised patients to visit their dermatologists if they notice white, pink, or flesh-colored bumps on the face, neck, arms, legs, abdomen, or genital area. The best way for individuals to prevent the condition is to maintain good hygiene and to regularly wash their hands, the administration concluded.
