The Moffitt Cancer Center announced that they will continue to offer their annual Spring Swing Sun Safety Tour—a partnership between the Moffitt Cancer Center’s Mole Patrol team and the Tampa Bay Rays baseball organization—to screen baseball fans for skin cancers as the baseball season kicks off in 2023. The tour, now in its 15th year, has already identified 112 potentially cancerous lesions after screening 141 individuals and offers free skin cancer screenings at spring training venues throughout Florida. Experts noted that individuals who are immunocompromised, have a family history of skin cancer, or have had previous skin cancer diagnoses may be at an increased risk of developing skin cancer and should undergo screenings regularly. In order to prevent skin cancer, the experts recommended limiting sun exposure between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM; substituting tanning beds and tanning oils for outdoor activities; spending time in the shade whenever possible in an outdoor setting; applying a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more once every 2 hours; and wearing sun-protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses.
