In a new statement, researchers highlighted the potential to utilize the metaverse for new opportunities in patient engagement, improved diagnostics, and research in the field of cosmetic dermatology, according to an article published in Cosmetics Design. The article summarized a recent letter to the editor published by Babaei et al in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology that explained how dermatologists can use the metaverse to educate trainees, practice almost every dermatologic and cosmetic procedure through simulated environments, review treatment options with patients, and track procedure and treatment outcomes. Additionally, they noted that with the ability to interact through the metaverse, physicians will be able to lower the financial burden for their patients by reducing the need for regular in-person visits. The researchers hope that as the metaverse advances in the future, the technology may even help dermatologists make diagnoses and use data collection to develop more effective dermatologic procedures and cosmetic products. However, despite the prospective benefits, the researchers cited concerns over current security standards as well as legislative issues regarding the metaverse that have left some skeptical about its implementation and sustainability.
