According to an article published in Loop, Louise Kaufmann, MD, was awarded a €20,000 grant from L’Oréal in collaboration with the International League of Dermatological Societies and the World Congress of Dermatology in recognition of her efforts to provide free dermatologic services to patients in rural Jamaica who lack access to dermatologists. Dr. Kaufmann plans to use the grant to fund her current project—which involves offering dermatologic interventions to remote and underserved areas in Jamaica. There, she and her medical team will set up a 4-day pop-up clinic, expand the clinic’s offerings, implement new programs, and establish partnerships with organizations in Jamaica to maintain patients’ continuity of care. Dr. Kaufmann noted that she has been able to travel to Jamaica once every year since 2016 to provide her expertise and train Jamaican physicians on surgical procedures. She intends to further host a Zoom or a telemedicine platform once per month to work through patient issues and concerns with local physicians. “I’m hoping the grant from L’Oréal will help with the continuity of care for patients [in] the community,” Dr. Kaufmann concluded.
