Mount Sinai Health System announced that it has received a new 5-year, $1.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS). The new grant will be dedicated to the expansion of Icahn School of Medicine’s Systems Skin Biology research training program as part of the Kimberly and Eric J. Waldman Department of Dermatology, and will fund two predoctoral fellows and postdoctoral fellows or physician-scientists. With the expansion, researchers will seek to strengthen intersectional skin biology trainees’ understanding of human physiology; examine neurons, immune cells, and blood vessels that interact with skin cells as a component of skin biology; and look to apply their findings to the development of novel therapeutics for skin cancer, vitiligo, hair loss, acne, and wounds. “In addition to bringing recognition of the breadth of institutional excellence in cutaneous diseases and skin biology at Mount Sinai, this training program will have an indelible impact on the future of dermatology and dermatology research for decades to come,” concluded Emma Guttman-Yassky, MD, PhD, the Waldman Professor of Dermatology and Immunology and Health System Chair of the Department of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine.
