In a press release from the National Eczema Association, experts offered tips to help parents of children with eczema manage the condition and keep their children’s skin protected during the colder months. They recommended that parents dress their children in soft clothing that won’t irritate the skin—such as those made from silk and bamboo natural fibers—and avoid using clothing made from synthetic fibers, polyester, and wool as base layers. If parents are planning a day of outdoor activities in the cold weather, they should ensure that their children apply a moisturizer to the face to prevent dryness. Additionally, once returning home, the experts suggested warming the skin slowly to reduce the risk of experiencing a flare from the sudden temperature change. Parents can encourage their children to take a warm bath and apply a moisturizer to hydrate the skin afterward. The experts concluded that parents should create an environment where their children feel comfortable speaking up about their needs to better prepare for the colder weather and avoid eczema flares.
