UConn Health announced that dermatologists, residents, and medical students from the university, in partnership with the American Academy of Dermatology and Firefighters Cancer Support Network, offered free skin exams to its campus firefighters on May 1, 2023. Experts explained that firefighters and especially first responders are often exposed to a higher level of carcinogens—such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, per- and polyfluorinated substances, benzene, and dioxin—than the general population. As a result, they may have an increased risk of developing melanoma. The dermatologists highlighted that they were able to screen 46 firefighters in 2 hours. “I think it’s fantastic that … we’re having this session … for the UConn Health firefighters as well as local firefighters in the area, and in doing so, increasing the awareness,” concluded Philip Kerr, MD, FAAD, Associate Professor of Dermatology and Dermatopathology as well as Chair of the Department of Dermatology at UConn Health.
