Mount Sinai announced that Andrew L. Ji, MD, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine, has been awarded a 3-year, $600,000 grant from The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation to investigate an invasive cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma subpopulation. With the Damon Runyon Clinical Investigator grant, Dr. Li will profile tumors from organ transplant recipients utilizing single-cell and spatial technologies. He explained that the goal of his research is to better understand how some invasive cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma tumors communicate with nonmalignant cell types in the tumor’s environment. He hopes to discover how to prevent the manipulative cancer cells from turning unharmful cells into new cancer growths and to improve the treatment of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in both organ transplant recipients—who are at an especially increased risk of developing the malignancy—and in patients with advanced disease. “I am immensely honored and grateful for this support from the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. It will allow us to pursue novel research technologies and approaches to improve our understanding of skin cancer risk and aggression in organ transplant recipients, which I believe will lead to improved treatment strategies,” concluded Dr. Ji.>
