The Mount Sinai Health System announced the development of the new Institute for Regenerative Medicine in an effort to concentrate new research and clinical initiatives in the replacement, engineering, and regeneration of cells, tissues, and organs. As part of the new institute, the Center for Epithelial and Airway Biology and Regeneration will look to improve patient care and outcomes for those with eczema, psoriasis, and hair loss, in addition to patients with sinus disorders, lung diseases, asthma, and breast cancer. Basic, translational, and clinical researchers across various specialties expect to conduct collaborative research projects to study epithelial development, stem cells, and regenerative biology in the new institute. “This unique cross-section of basic and clinical [researchers] provides a platform the tackle vexing clinical problems and offer real solutions … to bring basic scientific discovery to the patient’s bedside and promote novel therapies for [their] benefit,” concluded Eric Genden, MD, the Isidore Friesner Professor and Chair of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine and Clinical Director of the Center for Epithelial and Airway Biology and Regeneration at the Mount Sinai Health System.
