The Baylor College of Medicine announced that it has opened the new Skin of Color Clinic at the Jamail Specialty Care Center. The new clinic will offer personalized and culturally sensitive dermatologic care for all patients, regardless of their ethnicities, but will specialize in dermatologic conditions that may be more common among patients with darker skin tones—including hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation, scarring and nonscarring hair loss, acne keloidalis nuchae, and keloids. The Skin of Color Clinic will be led by Oyetewa Oyerinde, MD, FAAD, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the university, who will oversee initiatives to better treat patients with diverse complexions, eliminate dermatologic care disparities, introduce community outreach events, and provide cosmetic care. “I am excited to lead a clinic that addresses skin issues commonly found in underserved populations. I want [patients] in Houston to know that there is a place where an expert will know how to care for their specific needs,” concluded Dr. Oyerinde.
