In a press release from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), dermatologists offered advice on sun-protective habits after a survey uncovered that awareness of the risk of sunburns and the use of sun protection during the winter months is low. Investigators from the AAD found that about 14% of respondents were unaware that ultraviolet radiation from the sun can be reflected by snow, water, and sand, and 20% were unaware that they could experience sunburns in the winter. Further, only 13%, 6%, and 4% of the respondents stated that they planned to follow sun-protective habits when going for walks or hikes outdoors, participating in outdoor sports or exercise, and shoveling snow, respectively. Dermatologists stressed that regardless of the season or weather, individuals may be exposed to harmful ultraviolet radiation, increasing their risk of premature skin aging and skin cancer.
