In a report published by Ung et al in JAMA Dermatology, across a multiethnic pool of participants, atopic eczema was determined to be the only comorbid condition associated with the development of excessive scarring that showed nominally significant evidence across multiple ethnic groups (Black, White, and Asian)—an association previously seen only in Taiwanese and Korean populations. In subgroup analyses, variations were seen in other ethnic groups for other comorbidities; for example, hypertension was found to be a comorbid condition that increased the risk of excessive scarring among Black study participants.
