The risk of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may be higher among patients with atopic dermatitis, according to a recent study published by Chen et al in Archives of Dermatological Research. Investigators analyzed data from over 214,000 patients who participated in the All of Us Research Program. Compared with controls, patients with atopic dermatitis had a 2.87-fold increased risk of being diagnosed with OCD. The researchers hypothesized that accelerated brain inflammation caused by atopic dermatitis–related systemic inflammation and repetitive behaviors due to chronic itch may be responsible for the correlation. In a companion press release from Newswise, the study authors concluded: “As we describe more of these relationships, our ability to detect them quickly and provide comprehensive care to all of our patients is enhanced.”
