In a study published by Kanasuo et al in Melanoma Research, among almost 500 adults at risk for skin cancer, there were lower percentages of patients with a history of past or present melanoma or any type of skin cancer in subgroups who reported regular use of oral vitamin D supplements. In addition, the investigator-estimated risk class of skin cancer was lower among regular users of vitamin D vs occasional or never-users. The study authors concluded, “[R]egular use of vitamin D associates with fewer melanoma cases, when compared to nonuse, but the causality between them is obscure.”
