The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has issued updated guidelines of care for the management of atopic dermatitis in adults with topical therapies; these recommendations, which serve as an update to the 2014 guidelines on the same topic, were published by Sidbury et al in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. An expert workgroup of 12 physicians issued 12 recommendations on how to manage atopic dermatitis in adults with topical therapies.

Strong recommendations were made for the use of moisturizers, topical calcineurin inhibitors (pimecrolimus 1% cream and tacrolimus 0.03% or 0.1% ointment), topical corticosteroids, phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitors (crisaborole ointment), and Janus kinase inhibitors (ruxolitinib cream). Conditional recommendations were made for the use of bathing (including bleach baths) and wet wrap therapy, and against the use of topical antimicrobials, antiseptics, and antihistamines.
